Obituary for Rev. Dr. Lonnie D. McIntyre

Rev. Dr. Lonnie D.McIntyre transitioned from this earth to join his heavenly family on Saturday, June 16, 2018. At His request, he is being cremated.

He served in the United States Army in Germany from 1957 to 1960.

He devoted his life to his religion; this is indicated by his educational preparation for the ministry and his service as Deacon at Rogers Memorial Baptist Church; an Associate Pastor, Rock of Ages Baptist Church, Morristown, TN; Senior pastor at Cox Chapel AMEZ Church, Athens, TN; Senior Pastor, Speights Chapel AMEZ Church; and Pastor Emeritus, Mt. Pleasant, AMEZ Church, Rockford, TN. Upon retirement from the AMEZ conference, Rev. Dr. McIntyre joined New Covenant Baptist Church (Farragut) and served as a minister/Sunday School teacher as requested.

In 1966-67 he lived and taught in Manchester, England, as a recipient of the coveted national Fulbright Exchange Teacher Award.
With an undergraduate degree from Purdue University and a doctorate from Indiana University, Dr. McIntyre worked at Michigan State University in the College of Education from 1970 to 1988. He joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1988 where he taught from 1988 until retirement in 2000.

One of his favorite expressions was, IT IS WHAT IT IS!
In jest, his college students would often ask him what was the secret to having a long, 58 year marriage. His answer was always the same, "TWO PEOPLE have to bend over backwards to make it work. If she were nearby, he would then take the hands of his wife, Ruthie, and with backs together, would demonstrate that if you did not bend together to hold each other up, someone would fall backwards. While real life is really not that simplistic, this memorable visual would usually result in a nod of agreement and and a facial show of understanding.

Rev. Dr. Lonnie McIntyre was an avid fisherman. Each year he would vacation a week in Alaska with his sportsman club to fish for halibut and salmon.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27th at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with a Memorial Service to follow at 11 a.m with Pastor Frederick E. Brabson Sr. of New Covenant Baptist Church officiating.

Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel, 11915 Kingston Pike is serving the McIntyre family.
