Robert Edward “Ed” Knowling MD, passed away at his home in Knoxville on February 24, 2018 at the age of 84. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Edna Knowling; brother, Ted (Muriel) Knowling Jr; wife of 43 years and the mother of his children, Jimmie Houston Knowling; sisters-in-law, Jackie (Tiger) Sperry, Betty Roper, and brother-in-law, Hugh (Lorraine) Houston. He is survived by his wife, Jamie J Knowling; children, Lucinda (Jimmy) Alexander, Ed Knowling Jr., Michael (Linda) Knowling, Kathy (Joe) Seagrist; grandchildren, Craig (Amanda) Alexander, Brent (Lawrence) Alexander, Delaney (Dane) Winborne, Kathleen Knowling, Abby Knowling, Olivia Knowling, Ethan Seagrist, Kameron Seagrist, Luke Seagrist; great-grandchildren, Edith, Everett, and Brooks Alexander; nephews, Ted (Heidi) Knowling III, Dr. Robert (Sandy) Knowling, Chris (Maria) Knowling; nieces, Jane (Harvey) Thurmer, Amy (Scott) Williams; close friends, David and Lydia Guthrie, E.H. Butler, , Drs. Freddie and Margie Barron, Dr. Charles and Jane Gouffon, Gil (Billie) Bowman, Ed’s office staff, Jackie, Lela and Shelia.

Ed was born on December 22, 1933 in Chattanooga, TN and graduated from Chattanooga High School. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and his M.D. from the University of Tennessee Medical School Memphis. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and plastic surgery residency at the University of Texas in Galveston where he served as chief resident.

Ed practiced medicine for 35 years in Knoxville, TN where he often provided his services at no cost to people in financial need. He was Chief of Surgery at Park West and St. Mary’s hospitals and a board member and founder of Park West Hospital. Dr. Knowling was also a board member and volunteer physician at Interfaith Health Clinic. Other volunteer work included providing medical services at UT’s Crippled Children’s Services and performing reconstructive procedures in Guatemala through Knoxville Medical Missions. He was a Member of Knoxville Medical Society, Tennessee Plastic Surgical Society, Aesthetic Surgical Society, and the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

In his retirement, Ed loved to golf with his buddies, travel, and watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. His love for medicine never tired. He performed many laceration and wound repairs on his back porch and gave flu shots in the club parking lot. Accompanying friends to doctor appointments so he could say “I speak Doctor” on their behalf.

The family would like to thank the medical personnel, especially Linda Dicarlo, who lovingly cared for Dr. Knowling during his illness.

To celebrate a life well lived, a service will be held at Farragut Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. The service will be conducted by Matt Nieman. Burial will be private prior to the service.
