Obituary for Melvin Hector (Mel) Strickland

Melvin Hector (Mel) Strickland, age 83, of Knoxville relocated to his eternal home early Sunday morning, February 4, 2018.

Mel was a member of Hardin Valley Free Will Baptist Church. He was a native of North Carolina. He grew up on a farm in Four Oaks, NC and was the youngest of 7. He had a passion for comic books and was very passionate about music. He learned to play the Steel Guitar, Lap Steel, Dobro, Autoharp and Guitar by ear. He was a talented musician and played behind Loretta Lynn and had written songs for and with Bill Anderson. During his journey on earth, he attended Fruitland Baptist Seminary in Western North Carolina. Mel enjoyed evangelism, writing Christian books, and coaching youth sports. He retired after 42 years in the insurance industry. He was licensed and ordained as a minister in the Southern Baptist Association. He was instrumental in the establishment of the United Cowboy Churches of America.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hector and Emily Massengill Strickland, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Shirley Hodges Strickland; 5 children; Lydia Strickland of Knoxville, TN, Jessica Rogers (John) of Houston, TX, Ryan Trimbur (Jill) of North Muskegon, MI, David Strickland (Teresa) of Daytona Beach, FL, and Joseph Strickland of Asheville, NC. He is survived by 7 grandchildren; Justin Strickland, Joshua Strickland, Alex Trimbur, Hannah Trimbur, Jaida West, John Rogers Jr., and JessaJo Rogers. He is survived by his Sister, Gia Green of Bradenton, FL.

Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. on Friday at Piney Grove Church Cemetery for graveside services with Pastor Rodney Holloman officiating in conjunction with Michael Aliff. The family will continue a celebration of life on Friday following graveside services at 2425 Chukar Road, Knoxville, TN. until 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hardin Valley Free Will Baptist Church Benevolence Fund to help with remaining medical bills. You may also elect to donate to the Jerusalem Prayer Team in loving memory of Melvin Strickland, God’s good and faithful servant. Please contact the family for more information.
