Obituary for Karen Jean Cottrell Daves

Karen Jean Cottrell Daves of Knoxville passed away December 21 after a long illness. Karen was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to William Barber and Jeannette Milnes Cottrell. She graduated from Farragut High School in 1963 where she served as cheerleader and was voted Miss Farragut High School. She was active in choir and other musical activities. Karen earned a BA degree from The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga as well as a Master’s degree in Community Service from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Karen is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Gordon Daves, her daughters, Jeannette Allison Berg and Kirsten Berg Newman, grandson Thomas Goosemann II and her parents, William and Jeannette Cottrell. She is survived by her son, Ronald Gordon “Chip” Daves, stepsons Scott Daves (Karen) of Cary, NC and David Daves (Martie) of Gastonia, NC, grandchildren, Emily Newman, Meredith Daves Calva (Cole), Emily and Chad Daves, sister, Susan Cottrell Hill (Don) of Fredericksburg, VA, brothers Dr. William Cottrell (Rebecca) of Concord, NC, Colonel Scott Cottrell (Peggy) of Spring Hill, TN and Stephen Cottrell (Martha) of Knoxville, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Karen was known for her love of music and her active ministry was as choir director or pianist in several local churches. She had hundreds of piano students and also a brief career as a professional musician performing and recording her own music. It was not uncommon for her to provide music for weddings, funerals and other functions free of charge. Karen was active in church along with Ron and was a lifelong dedicated Christian. She loved the mountains and driving in the countryside with Ron. Karen faithfully supported the annual family reunion in Pittman Center with family walks, playing charades and her famous cherry crunch dessert. Karen was a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife, sister and friend sharing her love of life and music wherever she went. This included playing piano in her assisted living facility until recently despite her physical disability. Karen helped make the world a better place and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community.
