Obituary for John Eugene Scheibe, Jr

John Scheibe, age 74, of Knoxville, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his daughters on December 7th after a year-long battle with cancer. John was born on October 4, 1943, in Flagstaff, Arizona. His parents were the late John and Bulah Scheibe. He graduated from Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, Illinois. While at Willowbrook, he played stand up string bass in the orchestra. Also in the orchestra was Karen Welch, who played the violin. John and Karen met, dated and were married on August 24, 1963. John always said they made beautiful music together. John graduated from the University of Illinois in 1965. John and Karen moved to east Tennessee where John attended the Graduate School of Planning at the University of Tennessee. After graduation, they stayed in Knoxville and called it home for the remainder of their years.

John’s dear wife, Karen, preceded him in death by 49 weeks John leaves his two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Scheibe Greene and Ted of Birmingham, Alabama, and Tracy Scheibe Leighton and Brian of Bedford, Virginia, and two granddaughters, Cassady and Kendall Greene.

John enjoyed a 27 year career with TVA where he served the Tennessee Valley as a City Planner, a job he described as “absolutely perfect”. He had the privilege of working across the entire Valley creating and executing economic development and downtown revitalization projects such as Townlift. He truly made the Tennessee Valley a better place to work, live and raise a family. He loved the people that he worked with, and many of them became his closest, dearest friends. He is lovingly known by them as “Big Johnny”, and they all enjoyed many hours of dialogue and learning in The Boar’s Nest, where strong opinions were rendered on all topics.

John loved traveling with his family across the United States, but his love of East Tennessee kept him nearby for most vacations and weekends. He was happiest fishing, camping and boating with his family and friends at Norris and Tellico lakes.

After retiring from TVA, John and Karen started a business called Southern Lamp and Shade, located first in Fountain City and later in the Ten Mile Center. John and Karen worked side by side for over 20 years developing many friendships along the way.

He loved games of all kinds, including board games and card games. He enjoyed trying his luck in a casino, and fortunately his frugal nature kept any losses minimal. But even more fun than winning a game of cards was finding a bargain. Mostly, John was tenderhearted, loving and funny. He wrapped his heart around his family and friends who will miss him terribly.

A graveside service will be held in Chicago at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Young-Williams Animal Center,; The American Cancer Society,; or a charity of your choice.
