Obituary for Yu Ling Jiang (蒋玉玲)

Yu Ling Jiang (蒋玉玲) of Knoxville, after a purposeful life of 72 years, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, March 10, 2019, at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family.

Her name meaning "sound of jade" or "beautiful jade" in Chinese, Ah Ling (阿玲), as family and friends affectionately call her, was born in the city of XinHui, in the province of Guangdong in southern China. After an impoverished upbringing, she worked as a farmer and a shopkeeper in China before immigrating to the United States, where she was a seamstress and an automobile factory worker in Michigan.

She was a devoted wife, an even more wonderful mother, and an extraordinarily loving grandmother. Always the tireless and consummate caregiver, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, and—most of all—looking after her grandchildren. She was a gentle, self-effacing soul who lived by simple canons—one of which is do not inconvenience others what you can do yourself; and she was fond of the simple things in life—everyday pleasures such as walking the grandchildren to and from school, watching an old episode of Hong Kong TV drama, conversing with old friends over the phone, catching up on news of her home town, ....

By many measures, she had lived an arduous life—first surviving communist rule in China, and then having to start anew in the United States with her family as immigrants. Through it all, however unkind life had been, however many tough breaks she had gotten, her spirit was always one of quiet dignity and grace—and of undaunted perseverance and courage. There have been many who had more privileged upbringings, shaped by less limiting circumstances. There have been many who had been blessed with fairer fortunes in this world. But there have been very few who had devoted their lives so unconditionally, so absolutely to their family and asked so little in return as Ah Ling had. And for that, for all her sacrifices, for her love and legacy, her family is forever grateful.

She deserved far more than what this world could ever afford her. May she now reside in a far kinder place than the one she had left.

Ah Ling is survived by her husband of 48 years, Zu Xie Liao; daughter and son-in-law, Lu Ming and Doug Miller of Knoxville; son, DaHan Liao, and his fiancée, Rebecca Lee, both of Laurel, Maryland; two beautiful grandchildren, Maggie and Jesse Miller; one brother and two sisters in China.

The family will receive friends 12 to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 15 at the Click Funeral Home Middlebrook Chapel. Graveside services will follow in Edgewood Cemetery with Dr. Alan Smith officiating.
