Obituary for John William "Chubby" Watts III

John William “Chubby” Watts, III, 77, died on December 7, 2018 at home, surrounded by family.

Born July 2, 1941 to John William Watts, Jr. and Charlotte Anabel Watts, he graduated from East High School, attended Tennessee Military Institute, Arkansas State University and East Tennessee State University. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Melody Watts Brown. He is survived by his beloved wife, Connie Lynne Watts, who was a source of strength, love and caring in his life, his sons, John William Watts, IV (Lindsay), and Andrew Montgomery Watts (Courtney) and his adoring grandchildren, Alex and Katie Watts, Lily Jean and Waylon Montgomery Watts, Luna Lunsford, and Edyn and Hoyt Lunsford; stepchildren, Josh David Lunsford (Kacie) and Adam Hoyet Lunsford (Peggy); sister, Ginger Watts Justice (Jim); nieces/nephews, Jeff, Trent, and Dean LaRue, Paige Kerr Preston, Brad Kerr; brother-in-law Ken Brown.

Known to all for his kind spirit, generous smile, and positive nature, Chubby always offered be-fore asking, brought life and light to every room, and never met a stranger. After a lifetime in sales, he was an employee of the Knox County Sheriff’s office and served as a court officer in Knox County Chancery and Sessions Court. He served and participated in The Boys and Girls Club of Knoxville, The Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame, the Sertoma Club, and the Knoxville Quarterback Club. Chubby enjoyed a lifetime interest in and study of Civil War History and was a lifetime loyal follower of the Tennessee Volunteers. He was a co-founder and the first President of Tennessee Troupe & Travel. An entertainer of friends and family, Chubby’s life stands testament to all things good in family, friendship and love. To know John “Chubby” Watts was to love him. He left you no choice.

A receiving of friends will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow on Tuesday, December 11th at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 9908 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922 (Main chapel). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Friends of the Smokies and/or St. Jude Hospital. The family extends its deepest gratitude to Covenant Hospice.
