Obituary for Ervin Bert Gill

Ervin B. Gill, age 89, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday evening, March 13, 2019 at Ben Atchley State Veteran’s Home.

Ervin grew up on a farm in South Dakota and went to the Marine Corp in 1952 serving in the Korean War and was a Purple Heart Recipient. After the war he worked in the Home State Gold Mine and various other jobs in South Dakota. He moved his family to Indiana in 1963 and started working as an iron worker in structural steel. Ervin worked on the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the world (at that time) and several other jobs until his retirement. Ervin was a Golden Glove boxer, a bouncer, loved to hunt, fish, dancing, travel and spending time in retirement with his wife Elsie.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Elsie Marie Boschee Gill; parents, Reinhart Gill and Emma Bertsch; brother, LaVerne Gill.

He is survived by his children, Thomas Gill and wife, Brenda of Speedwell, TN, Debbie Harrison and husband, Ron of Portage, IN, Linda Gooding; grandchildren, Christie Gill Bunch, Jeremy Gill and wife Amy, Timothy Gill and girlfriend, Jennifer Capalbo; great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Gill, Eli and Carter Bunch; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19th at the East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery, 2200 East Gov John Sevier Highway for graveside services with Rev. Matthew Leonard officiating.

Full military honors will be conferred by the U S Marine Corp and the East Tennessee State Veteran’s Honor Guard.
