Obituary for Edwin Fulton Abercrombie

Edwin Fulton Abercrombie– age 66, passed away in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, Thursday, July 11, 2018 of a silent heart attack.

Born October 25, 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia, he actively participated in youth activities at Chesterbrook Presbyterian Church in Falls Church, Virginia, earned the Boy Scouts of America highest award, Eagle Scout, from Troop 878 in 1965, and was an inaugural Staff Counselor at Goshen Scout Reservation the summer of 1967. During high school, he was three-time Varsity Letterman in Wrestling, co-captain and placed 2nd in the Virginia State Tournament during his senior year at McLean High School.

Ed attended Lock Haven State College (1969), transferred to The College of William & Mary (1970), and wrestled at both schools. Ed joined the United States Navy in 1971 during the Vietnam War and served as an Electronics Technician - Communications on the USS Eugene A. Greene (DD 711). After his naval tour in the Mediterranean (1972) and shore duty at Norfolk, VA (1973), Ed attended the University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, and was a member of the UT Knoxville Athletic Wrestling team. He graduated from UT Knoxville with a B.A., Computer Science in 1975 and continued his graduate studies at UT Knoxville earning a M.S., Computer Science in 1978. While completing his Masters, Ed was a Graduate Assistant for the UT Wrestling team. The life lessons he learned from wrestling and his years in Scouts, as well as the friends he met through these activities, would help him overcome every obstacle he faced in his life. He was always there to help his family and friends in any way he could.

During Ed’s 40-year career, he specialized in system integration, IT project management, cyber security, and data center operations. He served the Department of Energy Oak Ridge Reservation at X-10, K-25 and Y-12 National Security Complex through multiple prime contractors including Union Carbide-Nuclear Division, Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, BWX Technologies, Babcock & Willcox, and Consolidated Nuclear Security. Most recently, he was President/CEO of Prime Time Computing, LLC and enjoyed time visiting his three children spread across the country, spending time with friends, and relaxing near the beach.

Ed was a two-time cancer survivor. He was first diagnosed with multiple-myeloma in 1995. He and his twin brother, Bob, participated in a NIH Phase I Clinical trial (a twin study) to produce an antibody to his cancer. He underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy, two bone marrow transfusions and a stem cell transfusion from his twin brother, and multiple extensive surgeries to remove tumors and fuse his back. He later would have two hip replacements, all which gave him an uncanny ability to anticipate bad weather. He was later diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Ed was predeceased by his father, Dr. Warren Fulton Abercrombie, and infant daughters, Lauren and Nicole Abercrombie.

He is survived by his mother Clara Abercrombie; son and daughter-in-law Capt Erick Reese Abercrombie and Laura Abercrombie; daughter, son-in-law, and grandson Alison Knox Abercrombie Chavira, Francisco Javier Morales Chavira, and Francisco Edwin Chavira Abercrombie; daughter Mackenzie Lea Abercrombie; sister and brother-in-law Clara Reid Pratt and Michael Pratt; sister Ann Miller; twin brother and sister-in-law Dr. Robert Abercrombie and Amy Abercrombie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 11, 2018 2:00-3:00 p.m. at Click Funeral Home, with a memorial service following at 3:00 p.m.

Interment will be October 13, 2018, 1:00 p.m. at Back Creek Presbyterian Church, Mt. Ulla, North Carolina.
