Obituary for Nancy Elizabeth Estes Buttner Irish

Nancy Elizabeth Estes Buttner Irish, age 77 passed away on May 30, 2018. Nancy was born in Charlottesville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth & John Estes, brother, The Reverend Manson Estes, and foster parents, Leone & Kyger Maupin.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, best friend and soul mate of 25 years, Dennis L. Irish; a daughter, Bette Buttner Huskins (Eddie) of Lincolnton, NC; a son, Kevin Buttner, stepsons, Lyle Irish (Patricia) of Knoxville, Douglas Irish (Julie) of Ringgold, GA and Christopher Irish (Jennifer) of Rockwood, TN; brother-in-law, Terry Irish of East Ridge, TN. Nancy also leaves her 6 step-grandchildren; Nikki Huskins Ratchford (Matt) of Stanley, NC, Wendi Huskins Iacobello (Ian) of Wade, NC, Skye Irish and Parker Irish of Knoxville, Ashley and Katie Berquist and two great grandchildren, Joseph (JR) and Lilly Ratchford. Nancy also leaves her sister-in-law, Irene R. Estes; foster sister, Diane Richardson (Dale) of Charlottesville, VA and foster brother Keith Maupin Charlottesville, VA, 5 nieces, 5 great nieces, and 3 great nephews. Nancy also leaves her best friends, Patricia Love and Dot Savage.

Nancy was a member of West Town Christian Church for 30+ years before becoming a member of West Park Baptist Church, and a member of the Golden Heirs Choir, the Bereans ABF class, a Care Group Leader.

After moving to Knoxville, she became a Certified Professional Secretary, working for Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge for 22 years in the Engineering Division, retiring in 1998. During her working years she was an active member of the Oak Ridge Chapter of Professional Secretaries International holding several offices, and also the Secretary/Treasurer of the Oak Ridge Ladies of the Elks in Oak Ridge for several years.

Nancy had more interests than she could keep up with, which included reading, needlework, knitting chemo hats, working crossword puzzles, and helping anyone she thought needed help. Nancy loved to dance and was a previous member of three square dance clubs. Nancy was an avid Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball fan and had season tickets for 28 years. She and Dennis enjoyed lots of traveling after their retirement and had many fun times together.

Nancy loved flowers and had many in her home and flower gardens, and often said she "wanted to enjoy them while she was alive" and has requested that there be NO flowers at her funeral. If you would like make a gift in Nancy's memory, please do so at one of her favorite charities.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at West Park Baptist Church, 8833 Middlebrook Pike on Tuesday, June 5th with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Sam Polson officiating.

Interment will be in the "Garden of Love" at Oak Ridge Memorial Park, Oak Ridge.
