After a valiant 9-year battle with breast cancer, Martha Gayle Steely passed peacefully on December 15, 2017, surrounded by family at her home in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her spirit is carried on by her husband, her mother, two children, four step-children, and three aunts and uncles. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Martha was born June 29, 1959 in Fort Knox, Kentucky. She graduated from Overton High School in Nashville, and from the University of Tennessee in 1982 with a B.S. in Nursing. She worked as a NICU nurse for over 34 years including periods at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and East TN Children’s Hospital. Martha dearly loved and enjoyed her family, especially her sons. Her passions included college football, especially the UT Volunteers, and cooking and entertaining friends in her home. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor, positive energy, sweet personality and tender heart.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ronald Carr, her brother, Wendyll Carr, and her first husband, Mike Hughes. She is survived by her husband, R. T. Steely, whom she married on April 19, 2003 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee; her two sons, Justin Hughes (Dana) of Denwood, Md. and Colin Hughes of Knoxville; her mother, Nellrena Carr of Nashville; four step-children, Clinton Steely (Megan) of Phenix City, Ala.; Amanda Ball (Brock) of Wichita, Kans.; Anna Young (Joe) of Edmond, Okla.; and Olivia Steely of Kansas City, Mo.; her Aunt Rozella Bower; her Uncle Ricky Carr (Theresa); and her Aunt Pam Tritley (Bill).
A visitation is scheduled for Thursday Dec 21 from 6-8 pm at West Park Baptist Church, 8833 Middlebrook Pike in Knoxville, followed by a memorial service officiated by Pastor Sam Polson. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Martha Gayle’s life. In lieu of Flowers, please send donations in her name to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, 2018 W Clinch Ave, Knoxville, TN 37916. The family would like to thank Dr. S. Spence McCachren, Thompson Oncology Group and Covenant Hospice for their care and dedication.
