Obituary for Leo (Lee) Travis Lester

Leo (Lee) Travis Lester, 85, of Knoxville passed away peacefully on September 19, 2017. Lee was preceded in death by his mother and father, Sally Crabtree Lester and Leo H. Lester; and his sister Peggy Lester Stout.
Lee proudly served in the U. S. Air Force from 1948 to 1968. During his distinguished military career, he was stationed at Furstenfeldbruck Air Base in Germany; Shaw AFB in South Carolina; Warren AFB in Wyoming; Little Rock AFB in Arkansas; and Sewart AFB in Smyrna, TN. In addition to his service as Personnel Sergeant Major, Lee was an ROTC NCO and instructor at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and a Senior Master Sergeant with the 308th Strategic Missile Wing Quality Control Division and the Titan II Missile Maintenance Training Division.
Following his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Lee was self-employed as a land developer, a real estate broker and a coal broker as well as an active entrepreneur. He owned multiple Tennessee small businesses in Jamestown, Sevierville, Knoxville and Gatlinburg.
Throughout his life, Lee was an active supporter, volunteer and member of many charitable organizations including the Salvation Army, the Shriners, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Elks Club. Before his illness, Lee and his wife, Shelby, were active members of the Goldwing Road Riders Association and particularly enjoyed the annual Wings Across Tennessee ride to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Lee is survived by his wife, Shelby; sisters, Judy Cargile (Willard) and Margaret Barber (Roy). He also leaves his extended family, his Christian family and many, many friends from all over the country.
A celebration of Lee’s life will be held at West End Church of Christ on Saturday, October 7th at 12:00.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of your choice.
