Obituary for Joseph John Vogt

Joseph John Vogt, retired founder and president of Vogt and Associates, a human resources management consulting firm, died on October 19, 2017. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church and most recently, Concord United Methodist Church.

He was born on July 27, 1930 in Kearny, New Jersey to the late Viola Mae Vogt and John Frederick Vogt. Mr. Vogt graduated from Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee, Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was awarded varsity letters in football and basketball, was Salutatorian of his class, and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He received a commission in the United States Navy upon graduation from the Officers Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. After serving at sea during the Korean War, he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant, USNR.

He worked in the field of Human Resources Management for Union Carbide Corporation for thirty years, including ten years in Oak Ridge at the K-25 Plant and the National Laboratory, as well as the University of Tennessee Medical Center for three years before founding his own consulting firm. He served four years as President of the National Alumni Association of Tusculum College, and has been a member of the Board of Trustees for over thirty years-most currently as a Life Trustee. He was presented with the Pioneer Award by the Tusculum College Alumni Association in 1982 in recognition of meritorious achievement and outstanding service on behalf of the college, and the Sports Benefactor Award for outstanding service and support to the Tusculum College student-athlete program in 1996 and again in 2004. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Carbide Retiree Corps, Inc. as the Director of the South Region for over 26 years, and as Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer for three years.

Mr. Vogt was preceded in death by his parents, Viola Mae and John Frederick Vogt.

Mr. Vogt is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Kathleen Vogt and their children and grandchildren. Joe and Kathy had three children, Karen Vogt of Oswego, Illinois, John Vogt (Lisa) of McLean, Virginia, and J. Kelly Vogt (Karin), of Knoxville; grandchildren, Aimee, Joseph II, and Alyssa Vogt, Julie, Davy and Jake Whitezel, and Allie and Jack Vogt; and great-grandchild, Caleb Vogt-Solis.

Family will receive friends Monday from 9:30-10am at Concord United Methodist Church with a service to immediately follow. Graveside service will be at 11:30am at East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors conferred by East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Athletic Scholarship Fund at Tusculum College, Greeneville, Tennessee 37743 or the Building Fund of Concord United Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37934.
