Obituary for John E. McHugh

John E. McHugh, age 48, passed away last Friday at his home in Loudon, TN.

Staff Sgt. McHugh is survived by his wife, Kim, and children: Thomas (Breanna), Niyah, and Carson. He also leaves behind his parents: Ruthanne (Ray) Ovenhouse and John (Patty) McHugh, Sr., as well as his sister Carrie (Brad) David and brothers: Derick (Cherie) McHugh, Rob (Lisa) Vanalstine, Eric Vanalstine, and Brian Vanalstine. Additionally, he was a wonderful uncle to several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Edward and Dorathea Manger.

John grew up in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, where he formed many lifelong friendships. He enjoyed all things outdoors, to include anything with wheels. Later in life, he became a huge NASCAR fan and loved to attend the Bristol races with his fellow Guardsmen.

John is a Soldier in the Tennessee Army National Guard and a veteran of the Iraq War, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal with “V” device for Valor for his actions during battle with the enemy near Turki Village on April 4th, 2005. He served in eastern Diyala Province with the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment during 2004-2005, and was awarded the Combat Action Badge. Upon his return, he continued his service as an Active Guard/Reserve Soldier with the Recruiting and Retention Battalion in Lenoir City and Knoxville. He touched the lives of many young Soldiers in the Recruit Sustainment Program. John was a true Soldier. He loved being a Soldier and truly felt his fellow Soldiers were his Brothers.

The family will receive friends at Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel this Sunday at 4 PM. Services will begin at 6 PM. Staff Sgt. McHugh will be interred with Military Honors at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on Gov. John Sevier Hwy at 9:30 AM Monday. Family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Tennessee National Guard Excellence in Leadership Foundation (Caution-https://www.tn.gov/military/programs-benefits/excellence-in-leadership-fund.html
