Obituary for John Andrew Metzger

JOHN ANDREW METZGER passed away at home surrounded by his family on November 29, 2017. John was born August 9, 1938 in Detroit, Michigan to Andrew Metzger and Catherine (Mayer) Metzger.

John attended the University of Michigan, and served in the United States Air Force. After attending several universities in Massachusetts and Michigan, he graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in Business Administration.

John worked in business and finance as an accountant, controller and eventually a chief financial officer in Adrian, Michigan; Toledo, Ohio; several cities in Tennessee, LaGrange, Georgia and eventually Washington D.C.

He met and married Shirley Hyder in Adrian, Michigan in 1965. They had three children. He traveled throughout the world, enjoyed woodworking, landscaping, reading (read the Wall Street Journal daily), watching University of Michigan football and Detroit Tiger baseball, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. His unique sense of humor, keen intellect, and uncompromising ethic will be missed by everyone who knew him.

John retired in 2000 after which he and Shirley moved from northern Virginia to Maryville, Tennessee, and most recently to the Farragut area of Tennessee. After he retired John used his financial knowledge and skill by working as a volunteer helping seniors prepare income tax returns through AARP of Blount County, for which he also served as treasurer. John also used his home improvement skills to work with Habitat for Humanity building homes, community and hope.

John is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Debbie Metzger of Maryville, Tennessee, her children Stephanie Ray, Andrew Herman and Kelly Herman; son David Metzger (wife Julie) of Seattle, Washington and their two sons Christopher Metzger and Zachary Metzger; son Yale Metzger (wife Susan Richmond) of Anchorage, Alaska, three step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren in Alaska. Two sisters also survive: Helen Metzger in Michigan and Betty Warren in Arizona.
