Obituary for Jerry J Thurlow

Jerry J. Thurlow, 94, a man who loved his family and his country, went to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday April 1, 2018. An active member of Grassy Valley Baptist Church, Knoxville for 47 years, he chaired the bus ministry that brought kids to Vacation Bible School each summer and also served on various committees. Mr. Thurlow was a retired Army Chief Warrant Officer with 36 years of active and reserve service. In WWII he was a Tank Commander in 5th Tank of the 16th Armored Division in General Patton’s Third Army. The last fifteen months of his life Mr. T lived at the Ben Atchley Tennessee State Veterans Home in Knoxville, where he was loved by the staff and his close friend Earl Lee. There he was known as the Candy Man because of the sweets he kept in his room for anyone who stopped by. He was preceded in death by his Wife of 66 years Jessie Lee Hash Thurlow, Brother Albion Thurlow, Sister Anna Louise Biel, and Grandson David M. Zuker. Survivors include Daughters, Norma Hyder and husband Wayne, Knoxville, Shirley Finley and husband Chuck, Johnson City, and Tina Zuker and husband Mike, Knoxville. Grandchildren, Reagan Hyder Taylor and husband Matt, Orlando, Florida, Jason Zuker, Dallas, Texas, and Breein Hyder Hill and husband Jeff, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Great-grandchildren Braden Zuker, Knoxville, Hayla and Brennen Taylor, Orlando, Florida and Waverly Hill, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Grassy Valley Baptist Church, on Monday April 9th, with a Celebration of Life service immediately following officiated by Pastor David Hockney. Graveside services will be held at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 John Sevier Highway, Knoxville on Tuesday April 10th at 9:30 a.m. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to both the Staff of Ben Atchley for the loving care you provided, and to the brothers and sisters of Grassy Valley who brought Mr. T great joy through your visits and special celebrations in his honor. We will always be grateful. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grassy Valley Baptist Church, 10637 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922
