Obituary for James Frederick (Fred) Fogarty

James Frederick (Fred) Fogarty, age 88, of Knoxville passed away on Christmas Day, December 25, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Fred was born March 28, 1929. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Fred was a veteran of the U S army serving the during Korean War. He was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1948 where he was elected President of the Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Classes. He was a four year letterman in football and received City and State honors. His fondest memory of his high school days was scoring a touchdown and kicking the extra point to win the game 7-0 against Knoxville High. He received a football scholarship at U T under General Neyland in 1948. Fred also played baseball and basketball and boxed in Golden Gloves at the Old Lyric. In 1948 he was the City Heavy Weight Boxing Champion and the Southern Heavy Weight Golden Gloves Champion. Fred was a past member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus and the Optimist Club in both Knoxville and Ft. Myers Florida He retired from GMAC in 1983, after 30 years of service. Fred and Betty moved to Ft. Myers Florida and lived there until Betty passed away in 2004. During his time there he fulfilled a desire to sing and developed a business of conducting sing along and karaoke. He led the singing at the Church of Ascension Catholic Church in Ft. Myers for ten years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, the beautiful Betty Adkins Fogarty; parents, John Fogarty Sr. and Grace Fogarty; brother, John Fogarty Jr; sisters, Mary Fogarty Cooper and Margaret Fogarty Beaty.

Fred is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Victor and Beth Jernigan of Knoxville, Rusty and Hillary Fogarty of Los Angeles, California, Steve and Jenny Fogarty of Knoxville; grandchildren, Amanda Jernigan and husband, Seth Turer, Garrett Jernigan and wife Courtney, Brandon Jernigan, Ryan Fogarty, Tyler Fogarty and wife Marianna, Sam Fogarty and Charlie Fogarty; 4 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Shirley Fogarty of Farragut; sister, Joanne Fogarty Hohenberg of Los Angeles, California; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3rd at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with a Christian Wake Service to follow at 6 p.m. A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan 4th at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with Monsignor G. Patrick Garrity celebrant.

Interment 2 p.m. on Thursday at the East Tennessee State Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran’s Honor.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St John Neumann Catholic Church Building Fund.
