Obituary for Harry Townsend Caldwell

Harry Townsend Caldwell, 84, of Knoxville passed away peacefully on Monday morning, March 12, 2018 with family at his side.

Harry was born in Maryville, TN on September 13, 1933 into the Presbyterian family of Harry H. Caldwell and Margaret Townsend Caldwell. Harry received his Bachelor’s degree in Forestry from the North Carolina State University and continued his graduate studies at the University of Tennessee where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. As a huge Vol fan he supported and rallied all UT sporting events. As a District Forester for the state of Tennessee he managed over 30 counties surrounding Knox County. After his career with forestry, he assisted with the opening of West Town Mall where he continued as the General Manager for 12 years. Although a reserved man of Townsend Tennessee decent, he lived an adventurous life. At 18
years of age he drove his Ford Model A from Maryville to Alaska including the treacherous 1500 mile Alaska Highway. He felt total freedom but encountered a shortage of bath water. Upon hismarrival, he worked for three days milking cows. He later spent a summer as a Forest Ranger on Mt. Rainier in total isolation where he manned a fire tower. As an avid outdoorsman, Harry loved the beauty of East Tennessee where he could enjoy his pastimes of boating, skiing, hiking, camping and especially fishing – while his indoor pastime would be spent with his Wednesday poker buddies. Harry and his wife Jerry traveled extensively and never missed a meet at the Keeneland Horse Racing Track for over 50 years.
Harry cherished his family and his passions are passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Harry is preceded in death by granddaughter, Haley Townsend Shannon.

He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Jerry; daughters and sons-in-law, Penney and Richard Shannon of Jacksonville, FL, Kristen and Andrew Spengler of Delray Beach, FL; grandchildren, Chase Knox Spengler, Chloe Alexandra Spengler, Cassidy Reese Spengler, Tatum Rae Shannon and Spencer Caldwell Shannon; and brother and sister-in-law Joe and Freddie Caldwell of Rome, Georgia.

We appreciate the kindness and support extended to us from Dr. Kenneth Reese and assistant Debbie as well as special friends Bob and Cathy Hutchins and David and Michelle Johnson.

Harry contributed to the Knox Area Rescue Ministry, the USO, St Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org and Friends of the Smokies, www.friendsofthesmokies.org In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to any of these organizations. A celebration of life service will be forthcoming.

Lastly – his legacy and passion “Let’s seize the day”.
