Obituary for Gene McNutt (Mac) Abel

Gene McNutt (Mac) Abel, age 96, of Concord, died September 18, 2017. He graduated from Old Knoxville High School and then from the University of Tennessee in 1943 with a BS in Agriculture. He played baritone horn in the Pride of the Southland Marching Band for four years. Mr. Abel served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. He earned his MS in Library Science from the University of Chicago in 1955. After a 33-year career at the University of Tennessee Libraries, he retired in 1978 as Associate Director. Mr. Abel was an active member of Concord Presbyterian Church, serving in many different roles. In retirement, he served in numerous volunteer capacities in the community. Mr. Abel was known as a local historian due to his extensive knowledge of the Concord-Farragut community. He preserved the history of Concord in the book he wrote and his wife illustrated, Concord: Where Time Stood Still. Many have enjoyed his hospitality at the family home, built in 1866, and lovingly restored by Mr. and Mrs. Abel. Preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Frances Larson Abel, parents, L. Claude and Jean McNutt Abel, and sisters, Anne Mary Abel Akana and Carol Madison Abel. He is survived by son, Bob Abel and wife Linda of Otto, NC; daughter, Carol Russell and husband Dave of Concord, TN; five grandchildren including, Barbara Abel of Otto, NC, and Jonathan Abel and wife Nancy of Raleigh, NC, Sarah Mathis and husband Jackie, Erin McCarty and husband Chris, and Laura Benner and husband Daniel of Knoxville, TN; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Concord Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 23 from 12:30-2:00. A Celebration of Life follows at 2:00 with son, Rev. Bob Abel officiating and Rev. Chuck Farmer assisting. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church.
