Obituary for Doris Swingle Hall

Doris Swingle Hall, Age 90, beloved wife of Dr. O. Glen Hall, Dean Emeritus College of Agriculture, and Interim Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Tennessee, passed away at home surrounded by her family on September 17, 2017. She was born August 23, 1927, in Hixson, TN, the youngest daughter of the late Ralph and Zelda Swingle. She graduated with a Sociology degree from Berea College in 1948 where she met and married Glen, her husband of 69 years.
Throughout her life, she exhibited a commitment to serve and nurture others. In 1965, as a member of the United Methodist church in Martin TN, she organized and taught one of the first Head Start Programs in the area. Doris and Glen joined Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville, TN in 1967, where they faithfully taught second grade Sunday school for 26 years. She was a long-time UT Medical Center Auxiliary Volunteer, past President UT Faculty Women’s Club, a Girl Scout Leader, and an active member of the Belmont West Garden Club.
She loved swimming especially with the UT Faculty Women’s group. A true nature lover, she enjoyed hiking and camping with her family in the Great Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains and took several memorable trips exploring the beauty of national parks across the country with her husband and beloved sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wilma and Bobby Williams. She was an accomplished quilter and created beautiful works of art for her family. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed preparing and sharing good food with her family, a tradition carried on by her children and grandchildren. A poet at heart, she lovingly chronicled family milestones and celebrations in her unique style.
She is preceded in death by her sisters Bettye Bruce and Evelyn Avel, brothers-in-law Lenvil and Fred Hall, and son-in-law Dr. Benjamin Stinner. She is survived by her husband, Glen Hall, Knoxville, TN; sisters-in-law: Wilma Williams (Bobby), Knoxville, TN, and Mary Hall, Bowling Green, KY; children: Dr. Deborah Stinner, Smithville, OH, Martha Dickens (Paul), Richmond VA, Joel Hall (Jennifer), Hilliard, FL; grandchildren: Kristina Beichler, Dr. Jedediah Stinner, Leigha Dickens, Hailey, Alyson, and Sydney Hall; and great grandchildren: Benjamin and Lukas Beichler, and Ian Stinner; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 pm on Friday September 22, 2017 at Church Street United Methodist Church followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church Street United Methodist Church 900 Henley Street PO Box 1303 Knoxville, TN 37901.
