Obituary for Charles Ellis Green

Charles Ellis Green, age 80, of Lenoir City, formerly of Oak Ridge, died at his home early Monday morning, December 4, 2017 surrounded by his family after a long and difficult battle with cancer. He was also known as “Shane” to his high school friends.

He was born in Old Fort, Tennessee, on July 23, 1937. His parents were Burlon G. and Edith Green, both now deceased, of Oak Ridge. He was a 1956 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and the Tennessee Institute of Electronics in 1967 in Wartburg, Tennessee. He retired from the Y-12 Plant in 1994 after 27 years of employment. At the time of his retirement, he was an electrical supervisor in the Electric and Electronics Division.

Mr. Green was a member of Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting and boating activities and spending time with friends. He was also an avid Vols football and Lady Vols fan and a car enthusiast having owned 59 cars, including many sports cars, in his lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years and best friend, Phyllis Hughes Green. He is also survived by two loving children, Charles Ray Green and his wife Cheryl of Southhaven, Mississippi, and Kahra and her husband John Gilley of Oak Ridge; 7 grandchildren, Dustin Green (Jessica), Misty Cresswell, Jesse Green, Rivers Green, Brence Gilley (Sara), Staff Sergeant Shana Gilley, and John Tyler Gilley (Lucy); and 7 great grandchildren, Alana, Alyssa, Lennox and Haley Green, Walker Cresswell, Ainsley Robinson, and Mika Gilley. He also is survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve and Karen Hughes of Marietta, Georgia; brother-in-law, Jack Clark, and nieces and nephews, Deana Devault, Knoxville, Amy Clark, Oak Ridge, Blaine, Pat, and Carla Burrell of Georgia, and Michael Burrell of Arizona; 2 nephews and a niece by marriage, Chris Hughes, Matthew Hughes, and Ashley Mitzel; several close cousins; and his precious fur baby, Moses, his little poodle.

He is also survived by his special high school friend, Gene Kitchens, of Oak Ridge, and special family friend, Guyda McGregor, the mother of his children, also from Oak Ridge. The family wishes to thank the caring and compassionate nurses from Professional Case Management who cared for him during his final days.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Gail Clark, brother, Roy Burrell, niece, Christie Clark, and father- and mother-in-law, Rufus and Helen Hughes.

The family will receive friends at Click Funeral Home in Farragut from 5 to 6:45 p.m. on Thursday with a short memorial service to follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Larry Dial officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens for internment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beaver Ridge United Methodist Church, Family Life Center, 7753 Oak Ridge Highway, Knoxville, TN 37931.
