Obituary for Ann DeMonbreun Charlton

Ann DeMonbreun Charlton of Knoxville passed away on May 4, 2018. Born October 2, 1931 in Nashville, Tennessee, Ann graduated from Ward Belmont High School and attended Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She was a member of West Hills Baptist Church. Ann married Tom Smith Charlton in 1953 and they enjoyed 61 years together until his death in 2014.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. William Andrew DeMonbreun and Ethetta Russell DeMonbreun; her husband, Tom Smith Charlton; and a daughter Ann Neal Charlton.
She is survived by her daughter, Sara C. Heagerty and husband Rick of Knoxville; her son, Tom Smith Charlton and wife Sandra of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandson, Thomas Andrew Charlton and wife Chloe of Little Rock; granddaughters Mary Kate Heagerty of New York, NY and Sara Caroline Charlton of Little Rock; great granddaughter, Rose Claire Charlton of Little Rock; brother, William Andrew DeMonbreun and wife Myrtice of McMinnville, Tennessee; brother Russell Cameron DeMonbreun and wife Charlene of Jonesboro, Georgia; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
A selfless soul, Ann was happiest when her family and friends were happy. She was a voracious reader, often reading a book a day throughout her adult life. An accomplished gardener, Ann truly had a green thumb and could make anything thrive. She fed her family from the large backyard garden that she tended along with her husband. A lover of animals of all kinds, she had a menagerie of pets over the years, many of which were strays that she could not turn away. Ann took pride in being a direct descendent of Timothy Jacques DeMonbreun, a French-Canadian fur trapper recognized as the original settler of what is now Nashville.
Graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Cemetery in Nashville on Tuesday at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knox County Public Library, West hills Baptist Church, or the charity of your choice.
