Obituary for Alexander James (Alex) Johnson

Alexander James Johnson ("Alex") was born July 24, 1954, and was named after his grandfather, Alexander Ondrak. Alex passed away on December 30, 2017.

He was a loving brother, father, grandfather and uncle.

His desire to serve in the Navy was inspired by the 30 years served by his uncle, Alex Ondrak, Jr. Alex loved being in the navy and was very proud of his role in serving his country, as well as looking up to his big brother and wanting to follow in his footsteps of service.

From a young age Alex loved to laugh and looked for any excuse to make a joke or pull a prank on his sisters, brother, parents or other family, whether it was dressing up as his brother’s favorite female 70s singer, “Esmerelda” or sending his sisters after a fish that had slipped off his fishing hook… into a pile of rocks that was hiding a snake.  He had a way of making even the most serious people around him laugh, and he thrived on it. Though he was forced to leave the navy earlier than planned due to medical issues, including multiple cancer diagnoses over the years, Alex never lost his sense of humor, hope or determination. He diligently followed his treatment recommendations, and was very vocal in his belief that his positive outlook was the primary reason for beating one cancer after another. When his niece was diagnosed with cancer at 30, he commanded her not to give up, reminding her that her one cancer was nothing compared to his 4-5 diagnoses at the time. When he felt well he enjoyed working on boats, cooking, fishing and hunting. He kept in touch with his sister, Agnes, and though they often argued like they had as kids, they loved each other and shared more jokes and laughter than anything. Alex had planned recently to relocate to Knoxville, TN from Virginia and was looking forward to being near his sister and niece. The return of his 7th cancer made that impossible, but his family is thankful that he is reunited with his brother Jimmy. Alex is and will continue to be sorely missed.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Vilma; brother, James “Jimmy” Johnson (Jimmy served in the army including two tours in Vietnam).grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Alex is survived by two older sisters, Elizabeth and Agnes; uncle, William (“Willy”); aunt Patricia (“Pat”); son, Alex Jr.; daughter, Rebecca, 3 grandchildren;a niece and anephew, and many cousins.

Family and friends will gather at 11:30 a,m, on Friday, February 9 at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, 2200 East Gov John Sevier Highway for full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran's Honor Guard and the U S Navy.
